CD Replication Vs Duplication

The Difference Between CD Replication and Duplication

Many people wonder about the difference between CD replication vs. duplication, often lost in the dark when it comes to choosing the right method of copying discs for their particular project. Understanding the difference between CD replication and duplication, however, should prove helpful in deciding which method works best for your assignment.

In terms of the result, there is very little difference between CD replication and duplication – both will display menus, chapters, extras, alternate sound tracks and other data regardless of the copying method. The processes behind CD replication vs. duplication, as well as the turnaround time, quantity and cost per unit, however, are quite different.

CD Replication Vs Duplication: The Processes

Although both methods extract data from the original content in the same way, there are two distinct ways to make a copy of a CD. CD duplication burns information onto a blank CD to produce a CD-R, while CD replication allows the adding of information to a CD during the manufacturing process to produce a CD-ROM (or Read Only Memory). CD duplication is standard on quantities of 1 to 10,000 discs while CD replication is the preferred method used to produce mass quantities of 10,000 or more discs.

The CD duplication process is similar to burning a CD on your personal computer (although a duplication facility can burn hundreds at a time), while CD replication requires painstaking attention to quality and accuracy, ensuring that each disc is an exact replica of the original CD.

During the CD replication process, a glass master of the original stamps the data onto blank media, where data does not exist before the process starts. CD duplication, on the other hand, uses a reader that copies data onto a hard drive and transfers that data to a blank disc.

Timing & Cost

If time is of the essence, the standard 2 to 5 business day turnaround time for CD duplication usually proves advantageous over CD replication, which generally takes longer due to the necessary extra steps. In terms of the cost, CD duplication is slightly more expensive per unit than replication.
