DVD Replication Vs Duplication

The Difference Between DVD Replication and Duplication

Understanding the difference between DVD replication vs. duplication is essential to choosing the right method of copying for your particular project. If you find yourself wondering about the pros and cons of DVD replication and duplication, the following information should prove helpful as you make your copying decision.

Just like CD replication and duplication, there is very little difference in the result of DVD replication vs. duplication. Both methods of DVD copying extract data from the original content in the same way and both will display the same menus, chapters, extras, alternate sound tracks and other data. DVD replication and duplication, however, do vary in terms of their processes, turnaround times, quantities, cost per units and layers of information available on each side of the copied disc.

DVD Replication Vs Duplication: Two Different Processes

In terms of processes, there are two ways to make a copy of a DVD. DVD duplication burns information onto a blank DVD-R to produce a DVD-R, while DVD replication allows the adding of information to the DVD during the manufacturing process to produce one of four types of DVDs (DVD-5, DVD-9, DVD-10, and DVD-18). DVD duplication is standard on quantities of 1 to 10,000 discs while DVD replication is the preferred method used to produce mass quantities of 10,000 or more discs.

The DVD duplication process is similar to burning a DVD on your personal computer (although a duplication facility can burn hundreds at a time), while DVD replication requires painstaking attention to quality and accuracy, ensuring that each disc is an exact replica of the original DVD.

During the DVD replication process, a glass master of the original stamps the data onto blank media, where data does not exist before the process starts. DVD duplication, however, uses a reader that copies data onto a hard drive and transfers that data to a blank disc.

Layers of Information

In terms of available layers of information on each disc, DVD replication proves advantageous over duplication. Standard DVDs can have up to two layers of information on each side of the disc, although DVD-R duplicates can only contain one layer on the entire DVD-R. Replicated DVDs, on the other hand, can contain:

  • 1 layer of information (DVD-5)
  • 2 layers of information on one side (DVD-9)
  • 1 layer of information on each side (DVD-12)
  • 2 layers of information on each side (DVD-18)

If time is of the essence, DVD duplication is advantageous over replication due to its quick turnaround time. However, the cost per unit of duplication is slightly higher than replication.
